In the last few years, education has changed a lot. Online methods of learning have replaced traditional classroom-based classes. They combine the flexibility of prerecorded lessons along with class discussions that are held in real-time using software. But even these online methods may not be enough for students who prefer the real-time interaction of a live classroom.

Live learning online is a viable alternative to these other methods of online learning that allows students and instructors to interact in real time through a videoconferencing software like Zoom. The classes provide students with the opportunity to ask questions, resolve confusion, and gain a deeper understanding about the content of the class.

While there are many advantages when it comes to live learning but it can be challenging for some students to adjust to this type of online learning. This study examines students’ ability to learn online and identifies core factors that impact this. The findings show that motivation to learn as well as self-directed communication are the most significant influences. The researchers also conducted a multi-group study and post hoc test to evaluate the gender differences in undergraduate, graduate and sub-degree students. It was discovered that postgraduate students are more ability to perform in all aspects of live learning compared to undergraduate and sub-degree students.

To ensure that students are prepared for a Live Session it is recommended that instructors provide clear expectations of what they will need to be aware of and accomplish prior to, during and after the session. This means providing additional materials such as notes, gist-based quizzes, sketches, concept maps and study guides. In addition, instructors should design activities that reinforce what students have learned on their own, for example by studying, practicing, debating and analysing.
